Observing in Exchange Program by Namati with BNWLA lawyer Zannatul Borna
BNWLA or Bangladesh National Woman Lawyers' Association is the biggest lawyers’ Association
in Bangladesh. They declared they
have complete service for woman aid in Bangladesh. They start from
empowering lawyer in the court. BNWLA has 32 years’ experience of fighting for justice
and combating violence against women and children. They have member more than
1000 lawyer. They have 180 staff in head office and total 300 staff in
Bangladesh include paralegal. But what exactly service they give service?
They call the system is comprehensive
legal service. The service is:
1.
Legal
aid service for free
2.
Law
and Economic Empowerment for Survivors
3.
Save
Home for the victim
4.
Psycho-social
counseling Assistance
5.
Education
Assistance for the survivors
6.
Policy
Advocacy
7.
Awareness
program
8.
Rescue
9.
Training
Institution
10.
Research
about violations of women and children rights
11.
Publishing
Information Education
12.
Etc.
I agree also, the service is very
complete. What survivor needs they can provide. I can imagine how easy if legal
aid in Indonesia has same facility became. If Survivor can’t survive because
economy condition, the institution will help with economic Empowerment. If woman
need home, they can go to save Home. If Woman needs rehabilitation after violence,
they will get psychology assistance also. The facility include safe house is
own by institution. They have also professional psychology, teacher, and the
other social volunteer with different background.
In Indonesia, there are so many
stake holders’ work in woman and child rights issues. We have Jakarta Legal Aid Institute, LBH Apik, International NGO like Save the Children, etc. But I never
see the complete service like BNWLA. Example in Jakarta Legal Aid Institute, we
provide legal aid, but if survivors need psychology assistance, we ask PULIH
which has consent in Rehabilitation to help us.
So how BNWLA funding to make a lot
of facilitates for survivor? I believe is a long process. My friend who is
legal coordinator in BNWLA, she said is come from donation from member. They
have also funding and program to maintaining shelter home. We hope
in Indonesia we can have the comprehensive legal service like BNWLA.
In Philippines I also find the
same facilities in Baranggay. It means, the facilities are own by government.
It is not surprised for government because they get tax from people. They are
rich. But for NGO? We hope in Indonesia we can have the comprehensive legal
service like BNWLA
